An overview of igaming revenue in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, the three states where igaming has launched in the U.S.
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania’s igaming revenues jumped to $43.06 million in April amid the second month of the shutdown of the state’s 12 brick-and-mortar casinos. Online operations weren’t subject to the shutdown and posted a major 73% increase over March’s $24.27 million, itself a 24.5% increase over February.
The largest increase was with online slot machines; revenues more than doubled, from $12.35 million in March to $27.32 million in April, for the seven casinos that offer igaming. Slot revenue at Rivers Casino in Philadelphia rose to $11.01 million in April, nearly as much as the entire handle in March. Table game revenue was $10.49 million, up from $8.78 million in March, a 17.4% increase. Mount Airy, the only casino in the state that sponsors online poker, raked in $5.25 million, a 40% increase over March, which was a 42% increase over February.
Once again, Rivers Casino was the big winner in Pennsylvania’s igaming space, earning $13.7 million, nearly a third of the state’s total online win.
Altogether, igaming revenues accounted for a whopping 93.1% of Pennsylvania’s total win from all sources, up from 15.8% in March. Of course, with the casinos closed for the whole month, the brick-and-mortar win was essentially zero and overall, gaming revenue was down 84% in April year over year. Sports betting ($2.88 million) and fantasy contests ($167,254) accounted for the rest.
Tax revenue from all forms of gaming in April was $18.33 million, a major jump of 53.3% over March.
New Jersey
New Jersey’s increase in igaming revenue was even more impressive than Pennsylvania’s. Internet gambling win in April broke the state record set in March; the $79.9 million was a 19% increase over March’s $64.8 million and just under 97% of the state’s total revenues from gambling. Online poker shot up to $5.1 million, a 209% increase month over month.
Sports betting collected $2.6 million. With few sports to bet on, it was down 80% from March and 88% year over year.
The Golden Nugget’s $27.64 million win accounted for 35% of the New Jersey igaming total for the month and a 12% increase over March.
The director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, David Rebuck, called his state’s April online casino revenues “staggering,” saying they show igaming is “no longer a nascent industry.”
Delaware
The third and smallest state with igaming also posted big increases over the previous month.
Delaware posted a total igaming win for April of $856,182, a 66% increase over March ($514,959) and more than triple the amount from April 2019 ($263,183). April’s handle was $28.5 million, up 42.5% over March’s $16.35 million and 59.3% year over year.
Video lottery games were again the main source of income, generating $591,442 (up 46% from March) in revenue during April, followed by online table games at $180,706 (up 23.3%) and $84,034 (up 31%) for poker rake and fees.
National
Total igaming revenue for April 2020 in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware added up to $130.2 million, a 31% increase over March’s $89.6 million.
With the casino shutdown in all three states continuing through May, igaming’s record-setting two-month run might go for a third.
