San Marino casino expansion over Italian border causing protests

The Casino Titano di Rovereta, in the Republic of San Marino on the border with Italy, is about to be expanded. The structure is adjacent to the Strada Consolare, a street which is just ten minutes by car from Rimini.

It is not surprising, therefore, that groups in the Romagna region which have long been fighting against gambling on that border are mounting protests.

For the city councillor of Rimini Attiva, Kristian Gianfreda, “the battle against the proliferation of slot machines is likely to become useless if a foreign state allows these forbidden activities”. In recent times, the Region Emilia-Romagna and other municipalities have been struggling with new legislation which aims to eliminate gambling establishments located close to sensitive areas such as schools.

Gianfreda has cited bilateral agreements between Italy and San Marino in which the latter undertakes not to “allow on its territory the establishment or operation of gambling establishments”.
