Silvio Berlusconi, leader of Forza Italia, has stated recently that he thinks it is necessary to reopen the Casino in Taormina as part of a plan for developing the South of Italy.

Berlusconi pointed out that they already have a design, the funds, and a contract for the Strait of Messina Bridge in place. With the country’s movement towards the left wing, the project became blocked, he said.

Angelino Alfano, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has expressed the view that licensed gambling establishments could fuel tourism.

Alfano commented that the government was studying interventions aimed at safeguarding existing Italian gambling establishments and reviewing the regulations governing the sector. He said the government was committed in all seriousness to financial transparency, aiming to balance budgets and disarm the mafia who are still taking advantage of gambling addicts and fuelling problem gambling as a result.
