The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board Friday reported $393.1 million in revenue in January from all forms of gaming and fantasy contests. That’s a year-over-year increase of 26%.
It also was the first month Pennsylvania gaming revenue dipped below $400 million since June 2021, when the state game revenue was $388.9 million.
The Commonwealth state set a record for igaming in a month with revenue of $108.3 million. The previous high was $102.9 million, set in October 2021.
“The increasing revenue numbers for igaming seems to indicate that operators marketing efforts are drawing in more first-time players who have become comfortable with the many gaming options and the reliability of the sites,” PGCB communications director Douglas Harbach told CDC Gaming via email.
J.P. Morgan analyst Joseph Greff, in a statement, said that the revenue was “down 16% on a comparable basis versus 2019 (reported down 3%). Slot revenues were $168.4 million (comparable down 19% vs. 2019), and table revenues were $78.2m (comp -9% vs. 2019).
Noting that Penn National’s Hollywood Morgantown opened on December 22, 2021, Greff stated that sports betting revenue “as hold was closer to normal, though still low (4.1% for the month, vs. 2.1% in December and 5.4% in 2021). Total sports betting handle was $794m (93% online), handle per day up 3% sequentially.”
Hollywood Casino at Penn National led with $41.2 million in igaming revenue, followed by Rivers Casino Philadelphia with $27.4 million and Valley Forge Casino Resort with $20.4 million.
Hollywood Casino at Penn National in Grantville recorded the most revenue in January for the third consecutive month with $57.2 million. Parx Casino in Philadelphia generated $51.8 million, and Valley Forge Casino Resort in King of Prussia produced revenue of $50.9 million.
Slot revenue generated the most gaming revenue at $168.4 million, a year-over-year increase of 19.7% over the $140.7 million produced in January 2021. Parx Casino ($28.9 million), Rivers Casino Pittsburgh ($19.6 million) and Wind Creek Bethlehem ($18.3 million) were the top three slot revenue generators in the state.
Total handle for sports betting was $793.7 million, with Valley Forge Casino Resort leading with a handle of $276.2 million and revenue of $19.1 million.
