Massachusetts casinos generated $97.9 million in gross gaming revenue in January, more than a 4 percent increase from the $93.5 million in revenues generated in January 2024. Despite the year-over-year increase, figures are down 4 percent month-over-month, compared to $102.1 million generated in December.
According to a report released by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, slots and table games generated January revenues of $66.2 million and $31.7 million, respectively. While table game GGR showed a year-over-year decline of just less than 3 percent, slot revenues were up 8 percent compared to last January. The state collected $27.7 million in taxes.
Encore Boston Harbor generated the highest revenue of the month, posting a GGR of $61.4 million, of which $34.3 million and $27.1 million were generated from slots and table games, respectively. Year-over-year figures were similar to the $60.9 million generated in January 2024 but represented a month-over-month drop of 5 percent compared to the $64.8 million in GGR posted in December.
MGM Springfield came in second, generating revenues of $22.7 million in January, comprised of $18.1 million from slots and $4.5 million from table games. Figures show a 9 percent increase year-over-year compared to the $20.7 million generated in January 2024 and remain constant month-over-month with the $22.6 generated in December.
Plainridge Park Casino, which offers only slots, generated in January $13.7 million in GGR, up nearly 14 percent year-over-year from $11.8 million generated in January of last year, but 5 percent less month-over-month, compared to December’s GGR of $14.5 million.
These figures come in light of the Massachusetts lawmakers considering introducing online casinos, having recently filed corresponding measures HD4084 and SD2240 in the House and Senate, presenting a framework for regulating igaming in the state.
