Penn Entertainment has received approval from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to refresh its mobile betting app and its retail sportsbook inside Plainridge Park Casino.
The ESPN Bet mobile app update will provide better integration between ESPN Bet and other ESPN products, while the Plainridge Park Casino brick-and-mortar sportsbook – which previously operated under the now-defunct Barstool Sportsbook brand – will be rebranded to ESPN Bet.
The news comes in the same week that Penn Entertainment received the green light to launch in New York from the New York State Gaming Commission after completing a seven-month acquisition of Wynn Interactive for $25 million.
As part of the agreement, the MGC has strengthened its position on college betting, clarifying that it does not permit play props bets or wagering on college awards like the Heisman Trophy or the John Wooden Award. ESPN Bet has removed the option to wager on college awards like these from its betting menus.
ESPN Bet has been live in Massachusetts since November 2023. Now, Penn Entertainment is beginning a project to rebrand each of its nine retail Barstool Sportsbook locations to ESPN Bet sportsbooks. Other locations undergoing the rebranding include L’Auberge Casino & Hotel Baton Rouge in Louisiana and Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway.
