Madrid: Gambling Land

Madrid doesn’t set limits to gambling venues exported from the UK, and they have continued to proliferate since their deregulation in 2006.

It is not only about bingo, slot machines or the Torrelodones Casino in Madrid. The focus is now on sports betting within premises exported from the United Kingdom which have been reproduced throughout the streets of the capital since 2006, after the regional government regulated the sector with law number 106/2006.

According to the Spanish Association of Businesses of Games and Recreation Halls, in 2008 there were 84 gaming premises. By the end of 2016, this number had already grown to 485.

Madrid is the city in Spain where there is the greatest willingness to invest in the expansion of gambling venues or increase the overall number of betting premises. Almost 20% of entrepreneurs expect to increase their investment, and 88% believe there is a growing market.

Madrid, Extremadura and Asturias are the only cities which do not set any limits to the proliferation of sports betting venues. Most cities at least set a distance limit between venues. In Aragon there must be 300 metres between betting venues, in Andalucia the limit is 100 metres, and in some places the limits are set according to the location of educational establishments.
