The longtime government affairs liaison for International Game Technology has announced his retirement.

The gaming equipment manufacturer said Wednesday Donald Sweitzer would be stepping down after 20 years with the company on Dec. 31. Sweitzer, who oversaw government affairs and business development, is currently chairman of IGT Global Solutions Corp.

“Don’s expertise building and nurturing relationships with state and commercial partners around the world, along with his insights into complex geopolitical situations, have been important to IGT’s continued expansion and leading market position,” IGT CEO Marco Sala said in a statement.

Sweitzer joined the company in 1998 when it was known as Gtech Holdings, one of the gaming industry’s largest lottery providers. Gtech acquired IGT in 2015 for $6.4 billion. The company adopted the IGT name.

Before joining the company, Sweitzer had prominent roles federal and state politics. He was political director of the Democratic National Committee during the first term President Bill Clinton. He was also a trusted advisor to elected representatives, including Senators Edward M. Kennedy, D-Massachusetts and Howard M. Metzenbaum, D-Ohio.

Sweitzer was also elected as a deputy town supervisor and councilman in East Greenbush, New York.

With Gtech/IGT, Sweitzer served as senior vice president of global business development and public affairs, where he identified and developed new business opportunities and supported the expansion of the company’s products and services.

“I can honestly say I have enjoyed coming to work every single day during my time here, and I love the people in this company,” Sweitzer said in a statement. “It’s now a good time in the business to retire on a positive note, with a spectacular future ahead for IGT.”

Sweitzer is a member of the Lottery Industry Hall of Fame.
