There’s one at every racetrack, a guy with inside information on a horse that’s guaranteed to win.
But instead of relying on tips of questionable provenance, what if bettors could access handicapping information that’s mathematically derived and unbiased?
EquinEdge, developed by champion handicapper Scotty McKeever, gives handicappers of all abilities a better chance of cashing wagers, from vertical exactas to the elusive Pick 6.
The product is available to tracks and racinos across the country at no cost, who then can offer it to customers via membership cards or promotions.
“If you’re a track operator, anyone who is live onsite at your facility gets your track for free,” says EquinEdge Head of Customer Acquisition Chris Province. “If you’re an OTB operator, we allow you to pick the track you want for free.”
EquinEdge utilizes the latest advancements in machine learning technology to analyze all available past performance and statistical data and formulate easy-to-understand, AI-based metrics such as a horse’s win % chance, trainer/jockey performance, genetic predisposition to race conditions, strength of previous and current races, and countless other handicapping variables. It’s akin to poker legend Doyle Brunson giving away his secrets in the Super System books, but with players trying to beat the odds, not each other.
McKeever could have kept the proprietary information to himself but decided to create EquinEdge, which launched to the open market November 2020.
“The sport of racing wins anytime we can get more people participating, and we are here to facilitate that participation,” Province says. “What EquinEdge provides to the open market are tools that allow every handicapper to play like the pros.”
Tracks and OTBs win because EquinEdge empowers players with confidence. As a result, players wager with more confidence. This means more volume and more churn for EquinEdge users when compared to average horseplayers.
“Tracks should love it because it gives players confidence,” says EquinEdge Strategic Development Partner Jonathan Schmitt. “Am I going to bet more when I’m confident, or not confident? The track’s going to have a higher handle because the confidence of players is higher.”
Schmitt is an avid sports bettor, but he’s always hesitated to try horse racing because of the sheer amount of information available.
“I’d be afraid to bet with a bunch of paper forms,” Schmitt says. “I would not like that. I want the information quick and easy, and this platform aggregates a lot of that information. I can get it all in one space. It’s not overly daunting.”
EquinEdge is designed to appeal to horse racing bettors of various experiences. New players will find they don’t have to sift through mountains of information to make good bets. Seasoned horse players will see that EquinEdge’s data is an enhancement to their skills.
Province, a longtime horseplayer, has stopped using the Daily Racing Form and has more than doubled his winnings since switching to EquinEdge last year. Strictly a vertical player prior to using the product, Province now willingly wagers on more sophisticated and time-consuming bets, including Pick Fours, Pick Fives and Pick Sixes.
“A lot of people are referring to us as the Daily Racing Form of the 21st century,” says EquinEdge Chief Operating Officer Mike Maiorana. “We have a lot of young players who tell us they are into the sport because of us. They would have never read a form. We’re hearing that more and more, and breaking down barriers to entry to the sport.”
EquinEdge is open to discussing sponsorship of handicapping contests with operators, and founder Scotty McKeever is available to facilitate handicapping workshops at racing facilities around the globe.
