As sports betting surges in popularity, the possibility of problem gambling also increases.
DraftKings today announced a financial commitment to the International Center for Responsible Gaming to address issues related to problem sports gambling. The ICRG’s Fund to Support Research on Sports Wagering will provide financial assistance to develop peer-reviewed, scientifically based research on the understanding and application of responsible gaming in the industry.
“We recognize that we have a responsibility to ensure that customers are playing safely,” said, DraftKings’ CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors Jason Robins Monday in a statement. “We are pleased to support the critical mission of the International Center for Responsible Gaming and fund important research that will drive responsible gaming innovation and customer safety forward for the entire industry.”
The Fund will accept applications from researchers interested in exploring topics related to responsible sports betting including:
- Differences in sports wagering compared to other forms of gaming
- Evaluation of existing responsible gaming interventions and programs
- Differences in problem gambling across demographics
“With the expansion of sports betting across the United States, public health research will be critical in better understanding problem gaming,” said ICRG Executive Director Dr. Russell Sanna in a statement. “We are deeply appreciative of the support from DraftKings to fund research that is cutting-edge and can be utilized across the industry and by consumers.”
Researchers from top-tier academic institutions may apply for funding through September 2021. Grant applications will be peer-reviewed before the ICRG independent Scientific Advisory Board selects the final recipient, who will receive funds for a three-year project ending in 2024. The research fund is open to U.S.-based or international public, private, or non-profit organizations.
