Connecticut will launch sports betting Sept. 30 with Foxwoods, DraftKings

Bettors in Connecticut can start placing place legal sports bets in the state tomorrow.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and DraftKings Wednesday announced that retail sports betting will begin September 30 at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Players will be able to place wagers at the temporary DraftKings Sportsbook at Foxwoods and betting kiosks across the resort.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection Tuesday approved state licenses for Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun for on-reservation sports betting.

“Today we celebrate a new era for our Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, sports fans, Foxwoods guests and Connecticut residents,” said Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Chairman Rodney Butler in a statement. “We thank Governor Lamont and his administration, regulators, and the many lawmakers who helped pave the way for legal sports betting and expanded gaming in the state.”

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont signed legislation in May 2021, approving sports betting and igaming in the state. Licenses were awarded to the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes, and the Connecticut Lottery. The U.S. Department of the Interior approved new tribal gaming compacts on Sept. 9.

“We’re thrilled to join the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation in bringing a holistic and delightful sports betting experience for customers in Connecticut,” said DraftKings Co-founder and President Matt Kalish, in a statement. “By leveraging the Tribe’s expertise in developing and operating one of the largest resort casinos in the world, we are excited to bring new offerings for consumers in The Constitution State.”

According to the Associated Press, a “quasi-public lottery” is authorized for up to 15 sports betting retail locations. Sportech, the state’s off-tracking betting operator, will run 10 of those sites. The first three Sportech locations, in Stamford, Windsor Locks, and New Haven, are expected to launch sports betting kiosks in the first week of October, The other Sportech locations will open through the remainder of October.
