Swedish slot developer Thunderkick is looking at Ontario as the first leg of its North America expansion. The company announced they’ve secured approval from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to acquire a license to operate and supply its product in the jurisdiction. It’s the commencement of what the company says is a “long-term growth strategy,” with Ontario as the beachhead.

“Ontario is likely to be a significant strategic move for us this year. We’ll also look back on it as an important marker in the company’s development in years to come,” said Svante Sahlström, chief commercial officer at Thunderkick. “Thunderkick is compliance ready and we’ll soon be able to showcase our games to lots of new Canadian players. We have a strong long-term vision for expansion.”

In Ontario, gaming companies that successfully register with the AGCO and execute an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario (a subsidiary of the AGCO) can offer their games to players in Ontario.

Ontario has an online casino market that generated $13.7 billion in wagers in Q3 (period ended Dec. 31, 2023) according to iGaming Ontario. There are now 49 licensed operators doing business in Ontario, with 72 gaming websites up and running.

Sahlström was appointed to his new position with Thunderkick earlier this month, in order to quarterback the expansion into regulated markets.

Some of Thunderkick’s titles include Esqueleto Explosivo 2, Beat the Beast series, and 12 Bolts of Thunder.
