The first scenario is the less interesting and less believable of the two. Imagine that the period of themed, all-ages Strip attractions that we tend to call the “Family Vegas” era—arguably beginning in 1993 with the debut of Treasure Island’s pirate battle, the three Secrets of the Luxor Pyramid cinematic attractions and MGM’s Grand Adventures theme park, and concluding in 2008 with the closing of Star Trek: The Experience at the former Las Vegas Hilton—had never taken place.

In that alternate reality, none of those attractions ever existed. Nor did the Race to Atlantis simulator ride at Caesars Palace, the Speed: The Ride launch coaster at the Sahara, the Desperado roller coaster at Primm, the still-operating Adventuredome at Circus Circus and the Big Apple Coaster (formerly the Manhattan Express) at New York-New York.
