Visitors came out in full force to Reno-Sparks and surrounding areas last year as the region set an all-time high for room tax revenue in 2021.
Washoe County hotels and lodging businesses reported nearly $420.5 million in taxable room revenue – a record for a calendar year, according to the Reno/Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority.
The boost in room tax occurred as Reno-Tahoe rode a national wave of increased visitations within the country as lockdowns and difficulties with international travel pushed people to indulge in more domestic travel. The year marked a significant turnaround for the travel industry, which saw domestic trips surge by 30.5% in 2021 after tanking by more than 35% in 2020, according to market and consumer data company Statista.
