The British gambling industry is bracing for impact and faces a potential “spiral effect” as the new 40% online casino tax comes into effect from today.

From 1 April 2026, Remote Gaming Duty – the GGR tax that covers most forms of online casino – will nearly double to 40% from 21%, triggering a negative impact on UK-licensed online operators.

Contacts have told NEXT.io the UK gambling sector may never be the same as hundreds of companies must now work out how to foot the bill in this new regulatory landscape.

While few operators have officially exited the market as a direct result of the hike, mitigation of some kind will be essential to remain in the black – especially iGaming-led B2C operators with heavy UK exposure.
