The UK government today (28 April) announced a consultation for simplifying the country’s online gambling taxes, but declined to propose a precise rate.

The Treasury and HMRC have published a joint consultation setting out proposals to replace the current three-tax regime for remote gambling with a single Remote Betting & Gaming Duty (RBGD).

The move follows a decade of rapid growth in online gambling, which now accounts for 44% of total gross gambling yield (GGY) in Britain, and follows on from a commitment to simplify the tax in the October budget.

According to the consultation document, remote gambling GGY reached £6.9bn in the year to March 2024, up more than 200% over the last ten years and 20% in the past five.
