The number of people seeking financial support for gambling-related problems in 2025 has already exceeded 2024 totals, with reported debts reaching over £5.3m since January, according to new data from support charity GamCare.
Registrations to GamCare’s Money Guidance Service reached 1,151 people in the first eight months of 2025, surpassing the 923 people who sought help throughout the whole of 2024, the charity said [Thursday].
The collective debts reported by those entering the service since January averaged £4,682 per person.
The total debt reported in 2025’s first eight months has almost doubled compared to the entire previous year, when it stood at over £2.8m. June, July and August all showed a doubling or more of referrals compared with the same months in 2024, with August recording the highest monthly figure on record at 198 referrals.
