Chancellor the Exchequer Rachel Reeves signaled she’s open to raising taxes on the UK’s gambling industry, setting the stage for a possible move to lift a controversial cap on benefits for parents.

“I do think there’s a case for gambling firms paying more,” Reeves told ITV News on Monday. “They make an important contribution to the economy but they should pay their fair share of taxes and we’ll make sure that that happens.”

The Institute for Public Policy Research said last month that lifting taxes on high stakes online gambling could raise the £3.2 billion ($4.3 billion) needed to end a cap on child benefits, a proposal backed by former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
