Paul Smith, an Oneida tribal member who recently became director of Native American Tourism of Wisconsin, considers himself an outdoorsman even though he lives in Milwaukee.

That will serve him well in his new role since most tribal land in Wisconsin is forested or rural.

Smith’s job is to promote everything — aside from gaming — on reservations. That means encouraging visitors to try outdoor activities offered by the tribes or individual tribal business owners, such as kayaking, hiking or camping.

He’s been doing a lot traveling this summer in the Northwoods, where many of the large reservations are located, and experiencing what each tribe has to offer.
