British-based gambling operators in the United States have been urged to allow external experts to scrutinise their safeguards for vulnerable players after they were criticised for having a “tremendous lack of transparency”.

FanDuel, owned by Flutter Entertainment, BetMGM, part-owned by Entain, and DraftKings, the New York-listed group, are among those facing questions over protection for those playing online casino games.

Each company has emphasised that gamblers’ safety is of paramount importance and that they have robust measures in place.

However, the National Council on Problem Gambling, an American body, questioned why they had yet to commit to a third-party assessment.

“They’re sitting on a great story that they won’t tell,” Keith Whyte, executive director of the industry-funded council, said. “It engenders a suspicion that perhaps they’re not really upholding [the highest standards]”.
