OPINION: The casino conversation New Yorkers should’ve had years ago but didn’t

Casinos. The topic looming over Hell’s Kitchen and Midtown West lately. “We don’t want a casino!” “We need a seat at the table!” (For the record, there is no table.)

Here’s the hard truth: the public voted on casinos in New York City back in 2013. A New York State constitutional amendment (Proposal 1). The November 5, 2013 general election ballot presented the public with its opportunity to vote. And they did. And it passed. By a wide margin.

I can see why people feel blindsided. I felt the same and wondered how we got here. So, let’s rewind.

Proposal 1 passes. Seven casinos are allowed throughout the state – in two phases.
