These last few months I have spoken to gambling harms professionals up and down the country, and have come to the conclusion there are two scandals currently playing out in Britain’s gambling industry. First, the obvious one: that the statutory levy roll-out has been hijacked by a narrow band of ideologues that are causing great long-term damage to the country’s gambling harms system.
The second is more insidious: that this politicization has enabled a conspiracy of silence to fester, which has then compounded the bad policy decisions. People who have devoted their lives to fighting problem gambling are being treated horribly, and we should care.
