Premier Doug Ford’s big bet on “more casinos” for Niagara Falls may not pay off.
Ford unveiled a new economic development scheme this week to boost tourism in Ontario, including new gambling houses in the honeymoon capital, in a bid to double the number of annual visitors at wineries, restaurants and other attractions in Niagara Region.
“I’m thrilled to announce our government’s ‘Destination Niagara strategy,’ a multibillion-dollar plan to build new world class attractions, elevate Niagara’s casino and gaming experience — meaning we want more casinos, big, large casinos to come here,” the premier enthused Monday in the Falls.
But given the myriad transportation challenges in getting to Niagara from Toronto — to say nothing about the competition from online gaming that has transformed iPhones into mobile virtual casinos — are new in-person facilities needed or wanted?
