Mattress Mack is headed to the track.
Houston furniture store owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale plans to make the biggest bet in Kentucky Derby history on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
McIngvale, 70, said he’ll wager “$2 million plus, maybe $3 million, maybe $4 million” on Essential Quality, the 5-2 favorite, to win the first leg of horse racing’s triple crown.
The wager is the latest in a string of multimillion-dollar bets placed by Mack in recent years to hedge potential losses on furniture promotions. This one offers customers their money back on a mattress set purchase of $3,000 or more if the favorite wins the Kentucky Derby.
