The city has approved a first-phase master plan for the Main Street corridor near MGM Springfield, designed to help rejuvenate the area.

The master plan is a collaborative effort by the city and MGM “to provide a roadmap and strategies to guide near, mid and long term potential” to that area, the plan states.

Timothy Sheehan, the city’s chief development officer, told councilors that the master plan is “critically important” in sending a message to developers and investors regarding what the city wants to see along Main Street, and help promote it.

The plan “articulates the city’s development priorities and aspirations for this important part of the larger downtown,” Sheehan said Friday.

The plan “envisions a vibrant activated corridor from Harrison Avenue to Union Street with infill development and ground floor activated uses that create a more vibrant and unified district” than currently exists, he said.
