A Springfield lawmaker called on gaming regulators Tuesday to fine MGM Springfield for submitting a sports betting license application late last month, saying the casino engaged in “caviler and lackadaisical behavior” and the state “missed an opportunity to hold their feet to the fire.”

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission awarded the Springfield casino a sports betting license Monday, setting it on the path to hold in-person betting there sometime early next year. It’s a potential boon for the business should all things go according to plan and retail sports betting launches in late January, as regulators have said.

But it comes as local officials have raised concerns with the casino’s commitment to the city.
