City councilors took the unusual move to support a newly-formed MGM Springfield union, saying they approved the casino seven years ago to bring good-paying union jobs to the city.

The council passed a resolution Monday urging the management of MGM Springfield to come to the negotiating table and agree on a fair contract that complies with labor laws.

In March 2024 about 250 employees including poker and table games dealers and attendants voted to unionize, creating Local 301 of New England Joint Board UNITE HERE. Since then, they said MGM Springfield has ignored pleas to negotiate and even a Labor Relations Board complaint against the casino has not sparked talks.
