The Las Vegas City Council this week unanimously approved a request from Elon Musk’s Boring Company to extend the company’s underground tunnels into downtown Las Vegas.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2023, the city says.

When Musk revealed plans in 2016 to start a “boring company” to tackle excess traffic, many thought he was just making a bad joke or pun. But by 2018, the Boring Company got approval for a test track in Hawthorne, California, near SpaceX headquarters, and a 29-mile loop was approved for Las Vegas three years later.

This week, the Las Vegas City Council said the Boring Company can extend that tunnel to 34+ miles and 55+ stops.
