The Second Chances Wildlife Center shared on social media that their beloved weather-predicting groundhog, Major, died on Groundhog Day.

“Sadly, and most ironically, Major passed away peacefully overnight. Groundhog Day. His day,” the center shared on Facebook Friday. “He will forever be in our hearts. It’s a sad day for us at the Center, especially for those who have been with us his whole life.”

The center shared that his death was not a surprise, as he was almost 10 years old and experiencing heart issues related to his age. Major had been living at the center since he was rescued as a baby.

The center would celebrate “Major Mondays” where he would predict the weather for the week. Photos of him on social media were shared weekly.
