As Polk County prepares to renegotiate its contract for Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino, three county supervisors who have dominated the board’s decision-making this year have decided to tap four new appointees to help oversee the county-owned racino in Altoona and shake up its oversight and management.

Supervisors Chair Matt McCoy said he and Supervisors Mark Holm and Jill Altringer wanted to replace all four of Polk County’s current appointees on the 16-member Prairie Meadows board after previous appointees failed to inform them of some important recent decisions.

Among them, he said: that the board was picking a new Prairie Meadows CEO, approving his salary and supporting a proposed bill at the Legislature, which ultimately failed, that would have put a five-year moratorium on approval of any new casinos in Iowa, he said.
