In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, demolition begins on the country’s first tribal-owned casino

It was the first tribal-owned casino in the United States when it opened up in July 1984 on the Bay Mills Indian Reservation When the Kings Club Casino opened its doors on July 4, 1984, it was something big to celebrate not only in the small Bay Mills Indian Community, but also across the nation.

It was the first tribally-owned casino in the United States with slots and blackjack games.

But with time, things change. Kings Club had to close its doors in March 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. It never reopened.

On Wednesday, the demolition started on the building making way for a new retail space with second-floor apartments above it.
