Host township for central Pennsylvania’s newest casino hopes to win big in tax money

Shippensburg Township has a population of around 4,200 people. And the township employs just seven people. It’s home to Shippensburg University, which takes up 65 percent of potential taxable property in the municipality.

There’s just one problem. As a state school, Shippensburg University doesn’t pay property taxes.

And so the township, which is about 45 minutes from downtown Harrisburg, has high hopes on one of its newest businesses, Parx Casino Shippensburg.

The state’s 17th casino is expected to open at 10 a.m. Jan. 26, pending regulatory approvals. The company will first host a couple of invite-only testing days. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Feb. 3.
