It is the end of a glorious era for fans of the sport of jai-alai as The Casino at Dania Beach will close its doors to the fronton on Nov. 28.

It has been a spectacular 69-year run of thrills for what many fans call the fastest sport in the world. Jai-alai is a centuries-old sport whose origin comes from the Basque region of Spain and France. The sport was introduced to the United States in 1904 with Florida having its first fronton in 1924.

The fate of jai-alai in Dania Beach was sealed when the Florida Legislature and the Seminole Tribe of Florida came to a negotiated agreement last spring that allowed pari-mutuels to decouple from the sport of jai-alai and harness racing.
