The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested 28 people in an undercover operation that culminated Sept 3 in the confiscation of 48 illegal gambling machines and more than $100,000 in cash, authorities said.

Undercover detectives conducted “Operation Bad Odds” with help from the state Gaming Control Commission and the Auburndale Police Department.

The investigation began with a tip regarding gambling machines at A-1 Discount Beverage and Discount & Deli, both in Auburndale. Undercover detectives went to both places and found the machines hidden in back rooms. Detectives placed bets and won money. Winnings were given to them in cash by the store clerks.
