Sarnia’s casino is staying open a while longer, preserving more than 40 local jobs and keeping revenue flowing to cash-strapped city reserves.
“We are extending the Optional Slots at Racetracks Program, which will keep Gateway Casino Sarnia open beyond March 31, 2026,” Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. spokesperson Tony Bitonti said by email.
“The staff are happy. The horsemen are happy. Everybody is happy,” said Jim Henderson, who owns Hiawatha Horse Park, the London Line facility and racetrack that’s home to the casino.
This fall, OLG announced it was terminating, by March 31, 2026, the lease for Sarnia’s 150-slot-machine casino there, effectively closing the casino and affecting about 46 jobs.
