With the announcement earlier this month that New York City will soon welcome three glittering new gambling houses, America’s multidecade experiment in casino expansion is all but complete. The house, as they say, is winning.
To state the obvious, casinos are popular. About 134 million Americans visited one in the past year, a record. Coast to coast, the US now has more than 1,000 of them, the most in the world. All told, they pulled in gross gambling revenue of about $72 billion in 2024, supporting (the industry says) 1.8 million jobs.
As the market grew saturated in recent years, New York presented the most coveted remaining prize.
