State secretary for legal protection Teun Struycken faced intense questioning from members of parliament about the progress of gambling reform in the Netherlands.
Appointed in July, Struycken is responsible for overseeing gambling policy. His role includes continuing the review of gambling legislation that was started by the previous administration.
The questioning in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (10 September) followed a recent report that highlighted troubling practices among illegal gambling operators, including adverts linked to suicide.
Christian Union leader Mirjam Bikker underscored the urgency of addressing illegal gambling advertisements. “We cannot allow commercial entities to exploit vulnerable individuals through unscrupulous practices,” Bikker asserted.
