Curaçao is working closely with the Dutch government to implement the island’s newly approved gambling legislation, according to finance minister Javier Silvania.
After having a “constructive meeting” with Dutch minister of justice and safety David van Weel and secretary of state for kingdom relations and digitalisation Zsolt Szabó, Silvania outlined the next steps for implementing the National Ordinance for Games of Chance (LOK), which passed in December.
The LOK bill, approved by 13 legislators to 6, marks a significant move in Curaçao’s efforts to overhaul its gambling sector amid an ongoing licensing scandal.
The reforms, first introduced in parliament in December 2022, are a direct response to demands from the Dutch government, which tied Covid relief to several legal reforms, including the requirement to clean up Curaçao’s gambling industry.
