The Ventura City Council approved the first step in letting Players Casino temporarily relocate to the Derby Club at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

The council is expected to give final approval of the move on Nov. 8. Council members voted 6-0 in favor of the casino’s relocation Monday with councilman Mike Johnson absent.

“The intent is to have the casino return to a regular business location in the city,” said City Attorney Gregory Diaz.

The casino, formerly located at 6580 Auto Center Drive, temporarily ended operations in December 2020 largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic but ultimately closed and filed for bankruptcy on April 6. The owner also terminated its lease with the property owner.
