Construction is underway at the site of a new casino in Butte County.

The Mechoopda tribe is building a new casino near the interchange of Highway 99 and 149. The location is near the town of Durham about eight miles south of Chico. The new casino will be built off Openshaw Road. Crews broke ground just a few weeks ago.

Few details are available. Tribe spokesman Doug Elmets said the Mechoopda Tribe has begun construction on a “temporary casino.”

Elmets added this is the “first step towards tribal self-determination and economic opportunities for our members and those who live and work in our region.”
