The young card player shifts uncomfortably in his seat while the rest of the table waits for his move. He huffs and puffs before fixing his gaze on his opponent.

The pot in the middle is worth more than £800, and he must stake his last £300 of chips if he wants to see his opponent’s hand. If he folds, he loses the pot. But if he calls the £300 and his opponent shows him a better hand than his, he loses everything. He is “in the blender”, as poker players say.

Finally, he takes the risk and throws in his chips. His adversary calmly turns over his cards — a full house.
