During the regular monthly meeting of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council, no actionable items were on the agenda but councilors did hear from Chuck Garrett, CEO for Cherokee Nation Businesses, on the status of the Pope County, Arkansas, gaming license sought by Cherokee Nation Businesses.

A petition circulated by opponents of the casino, seeking to remove any language concerning the Pope County casino from the Arkansas Constitution was deemed to have enough signatures to get on the Nov. 5 ballot. Garrett said CNB will challenge the validity of the petition.

“We are challenging that petition on two counts: No. 1, that the signatures were collected illegally through deception and other means that were not compliant with laws and rules of the state of Arkansas,” Garrett said.
