Sports betting in Massachusetts changes the math for Rhode Island

Legalizing sports betting comes with talk of a financial boost to taxpayers. It does generate cash for the state, but relatively speaking, not a huge windfall.

Massachusetts lawmakers, with their new sports betting deal, expect it to bring in about $30 million a year, and it looks like some of that is from the benefit Rhode Island is currently reaping.

The state of Rhode Island gets just over half the sports betting revenue that comes into the state through Bally’s two casinos and its mobile app.

In a statement to NBC 10 News, the Department of Revenue said it is reviewing the Massachusetts deal and its impact on Rhode Island.
