Nebraska: Fonner Park plans temporary casino by year’s end, as legislature adopts rules limiting casinos at new racetracks

Fonner Park plans to have a casino open by this fall while other communities may have to wait.

While they haven’t started to run yet, Nebraska horse tracks are closer to opening casinos, something they say is vital to the future of thoroughbred racing.

Chris Kotulak of Fonner Park said, “We are on vapors now with our industry and we are in an urgent mode where we have to start showing that money can be provided to these individuals who have dedicated their lives to the racetrack.”

The law approved by voters limits games of chance to horse tracks. The Fonner Park CEO says horse racing needs to remain a priority, something he fears could be sacrificed with too many casinos.
