A Romanian MEP has proposed a harmonized European levy on the online gambling industry to fund harm prevention and education initiatives.

Victor Negrescu, vice-president of the European Parliament and member of the Socialists and Democrats group, has put forward a proposal to introduce a coordinated EU-level tax on online gambling and betting companies, with proceeds directed towards education and youth policies.

It comes as operators throughout the world have come under increased tax pressure that critics say is leading to an increased share of gambling revenue flowing towards the black market.

Negrescu said: “I proposed a fair and realistic alternative to finance education, which does not tax citizens and does not put pressure on national budgets.”
